Achievement Gap vs Ambition Gap according to the COO of Facebook

by Meg on June 27, 2011

Back in May, Sheryl Sandberg (the COO of Facebook), gave a great commencement speech at Barnard college.  She spoke directly to the fact that women need to step up their game and the first step in doing so was to close the ambition gap first.  What did she mean by that?  Don’t close doors before they are even open to you.  In other words, don’t say no before yes even becomes an option.  She spoke of women she knew that would take roles in firms that demanded less because they knew someday they might have children.  Wait to cross those bridges as you get to them.

Anyhow, please take the time to listen to this whole speech.  Even if you put it on in the background while doing something else, it’s great for women of all ages.
