DIY Spa Night

by becca on October 3, 2011

Last weekend some girlfriends and I got together for our own DIY Spa Night at our friend Erica’s new apartment. We had some successes, and one big fat fail.

First, we used two different homemade hair deep conditioners that I prepared. The first I found via Pinterest at http://www.crunchybetty.com/farmers-market-facials-pumpkin. This simple pumpkin-based recipe:

hair mask

  • 1c cooked and cubed pumpkin (we used a can of pumpkin)
  • 4Tbsp coconut oil (I couldn’t find any, so I used coconut milk)
  • 1Tbsp jojoba oil (I added a bit more to compensate for the missing coconut oil)

I whipped it up in my trusty Magic Bullet — my favorite kitchen gadget — and saturated my hair with it. Think dye-your-own-hair-at-home saturated. Next, I wrapped my head in a plastic cling wrap helmet for 60 minutes. It looked like this:

I won’t even post the recipe for the second deep conditioner we tried. It was made from avocados and mayo. My friends who tried that one said it made their hair feel like straw. Big fat fail.

Next we applied my friend Ashley’s homemade facial mask. She found it here: http://www.natural-homeremedies-for-life.com/cucumber-mask.html. It consisted of:

face mask

  • 1/2 banana
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1Tbsp warmed honey
  • 4Tbsp lemon juice

After mixing it all together, I applied it to my face, making sure to keep it away from my eyes. It should be noted that one of the girlfriends didn’t heed Ashley’s caution about keeping it away from her eyes…and lemon burns. From there it was time to place a cucumber slice over each eye, and lay back to relax for 30 minutes.

After the 30 minute mask dried, I washed it off in the sink before getting ready to use the last DIY Spa Night treat: Chocolate Sugar Scrub! We each needed to shower and wash the hair conditioning treatment out of our hair (use a good shampoo, and wash it twice!), so Lisa brought along a home made sugar scrub. Her recipe:

  • 2 Tbsp olive oil
  • 1/2 Tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1 c brown sugar
  • 1/2 Tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 c white sugar

All in all, it was a mostly successful night. We were able to give ourselves the spa treatment at very little cost, we all had soft skin from the face mask and sugar scrub…and two of us had very soft, silky hair!

What are your favorite DIY beauty treatments?
