Women in Tech Mondays: Consumer electronics need to go beyond pink to appeal to women

by Meg on January 12, 2009

I’m a sucker for any article about women/girls in technology and I always think they are important to share and planning on making it a habit starting today!

I especially like today’s article “Consumer electronics need to go beyond ‘pink’ to appeal to women

The best quote of the article being, “The first thing to realize in product design is that women don’t need special products, and that they need to be designed for both men and women without stereotyping what women want.”  I couldn’t agree with this more and is one of the themes of GirlHack.  Yes, I use a lot of pink – but it’s an ironic tone and almost to “reclaim” the color and stop making it “bubble gum.”

I’ve often toyed with the idea of having a “Pink” gadget feature where I review pink electronics to point out why they are good or why they suck based upon technical reasons and not the color.

Regardless, I’m glad to see some attention being brought to the fact that I don’t need a PINK version of a piece of technology to like it and enjoy it.  I want it to be good and made well, end of story.
